Bart Shatto comes home

By DeWayne Bartels
Peoria Times-Observer
Wed Mar 04, 2009, 09:41 AM CST

Bart Shatto calls Peoria his hometown, but he gets back here very seldom.
“I live like a gypsy,” he said, laughing.
Shatto, 44, is a Broadway performer and vocalist and a regular vocalist with the Trans-Siberian Orchestra.
He came home for a few days last month to spend time with his mother, who lives in North Peoria. It was a short stop-over before heading to rehearsals for the lead in a new production of “Scandalous,” a play based on the life of D.H. Lawrence, in New Orleans later this month.
“This is my purpose,” he said. “This is what I’m supposed to do.”

You can't go home (companion piece)

By DeWayne Bartels
Peoria Times-Observer
Wed Mar 04, 2009, 09:38 AM CST

As Bart Shatto and I sat in the basement of his mother’s North Peoria home, I asked what I thought would be a throw-away question — the kind you ask thinking maybe something interesting will emerge from.
It did.
I asked Shatto, “Can you ever really come home?”
The question evoked a torrent of emotion — chief among them anger — with that query.
Shatto is a heavyweight performer on Broadway. He is also a vocalist with the Trans-Siberian Orchestra.
Those are pretty impressive credentials.
They impressed me.

2.1.2009 - Bart Shatto will be reading for Wildhorn & Black's BONNIE & CLYDE

Roundabout to Present Reading of Wildhorn & Black's BONNIE & CLYDE with Director Calhoun & Music Director McDaniel

BroadwayWorld.com has learned that The Roundabout Theatre Company will be presenting a reading of the new Broadway-bound musical BONNIE & CLYDE on February 9, 2009. The show features a book by Ivan Menchell, music by Frank Wildhorn, lyrics by Don Black, direction by Jeff Calhoun and music direction by John McDaniel.

The show covers the tale of Bonnie Parker and Clyde Barrow, who met when they were nineteen. What started out as an adolescent crush lead to the most dangerous love story this country has ever known.

What promises to be a seductive and cinematic new musical will examine how a troubled Texas teen and a love-sick waitress became America's most infamous couple. At this time there is no word on casting for the invite-only reading, or on the schedule for the show, but insiders are buzzing about the show's future prospects, with it's non-traditional score, combining rockabilly, blues and gospell music.

Broadway comes to Millstone for arts center opening

MILLSTONE — New York City may be near enough for some local commuters, but the stages of Broadway can seem far away to an actor looking to make it big.

Things will change this Saturday night, however, when “One Night on Broadway” officially opens the new 1,200-seat Millstone Performing Arts Center.

The performance will feature both Broadway actors and locals in songs from a number of contemporary shows, including popular works such as “The Phantom of the Opera,” “West Side Story,” “Les Misérables” and “The Lion King.”

One actor bringing Manhattan to Millstone is
Bart Shatto, who played Jean Valjean for one-and-a-half years in the Broadway production of “Les Misérables” and will reprise his role for several songs on Saturday. A veteran actor, who also has appeared in film, television and Broadway productions of “Dracula” and “The Civil War,” has toured nationally in several companies. He is now in his sixth year with the rock band Trans-Siberian Orchestra, where he is a featured singer.   Read More>

"When other kids were out climbing trees, he'd be in the house humming," was a printable quote in the local newspaper attributed to Bart's older brother, Brett.  Growing up as a product of the true "Heartland Of America" (respectively, from Peoria, Illinois to rural Bradford, then back to Peoria), there was plenty for Bart to dream and sing about.  From his earliest days,
