Bart Shatto calls Peoria his
hometown, but he gets back here very seldom.
“I live like a gypsy,” he said, laughing.
Shatto, 44, is a Broadway performer and vocalist and a
regular vocalist with the Trans-Siberian Orchestra.
He came home for a few days last month to spend time
with his mother, who lives in North Peoria. It was a
short stop-over before heading to rehearsals for the
lead in a new production of “Scandalous,” a play based
on the life of D.H. Lawrence, in New Orleans later this
month.
“This is my purpose,” he said. “This is what I’m
supposed to do.”

As Bart Shatto and I sat in the
basement of his mother’s North Peoria home, I asked what
I thought would be a throw-away question — the kind you
ask thinking maybe something interesting will emerge
from.
It did.
I asked Shatto, “Can you ever really come home?”
The question evoked a torrent of emotion — chief among
them anger — with that query.
Shatto is a heavyweight performer on Broadway. He is
also a vocalist with the Trans-Siberian Orchestra.
Those are pretty impressive credentials.
They impressed me.

Roundabout to
Present Reading of Wildhorn & Black's BONNIE & CLYDE
with Director Calhoun & Music Director McDaniel
BroadwayWorld.com
has learned
that The Roundabout Theatre Company will be presenting a
reading of the new Broadway-bound musical BONNIE & CLYDE
on February 9, 2009. The show features a book by Ivan Menchell, music by Frank Wildhorn, lyrics by Don Black,
direction by Jeff Calhoun and music direction by John
McDaniel.
The show covers the tale of Bonnie Parker and Clyde
Barrow, who met when they were nineteen. What started
out as an adolescent crush lead to the most dangerous
love story this country has ever known.
What promises to be a seductive and cinematic new
musical will examine how a troubled Texas teen and a
love-sick waitress became America's most infamous
couple. At this time there is no word on casting for the
invite-only reading, or on the schedule for the show,
but insiders are buzzing about the show's future
prospects, with it's non-traditional score, combining
rockabilly, blues and gospell music. Read

- Bart
Shatto was
part of an all-star cast performing for President
George Bush and the first lady Laura Bush at the
annual Ford Theater Gala. Bart and other members
of the cast performed the "Civil War" for the
President, first lady and other dignitaries.
"When other kids were
out climbing trees, he'd be in the house humming,"
was a printable quote in the local newspaper
attributed to Bart's older brother, Brett.
Growing up as a product of the true "Heartland Of
America" (respectively, from Peoria, Illinois to
rural Bradford, then back to Peoria), there was
plenty for Bart to dream and sing about. From
his earliest days,
"For
Bart Shatto
as Bobby makes of this moment a plainly touching
muted cry for love. The actor is so skillful
that the playwright's conscience cuts through
the surrounding sleaze in a flash."
